I've had both the Spax non-adjustable and Koni adjustable shocks on my 16v.
The Spax worked pretty well (matched with their springs) for about a year,
maybe a year and a half. After 2.5 years both fronts were pretty much
blown, and the rears weren't doing so well either. One of the front
springs had deformed a bit too...Overall I would say Spax is ok for what
you pay, but don't expect them to last forever. BTW they only have one
spring+ shock kit for all A1 cars, which means the package was a little
soft for my heavier 16v.

As for the Konis, they're great. Expensive, but worth it in the long run
IMO due to their quality out of the box and lifetime warrantee. As for
Tokico, they had some quality control problems a few years ago that have
apparently been addressed, but who knows for sure.
I've never driven a car with them, so I can't really comment on any valving
advantages over the Konis or Spax; however, I think the range of adjustment
on the Konis is fine, and you can sort of adjust compression by adjusting
spring rates.

HTH!
