Hello from Canada

Hello everyone,

I was on this mailing list a while back, when I bought my first '86 8v
Scirocco. I had to leave for a period of time, given the unstability of both
my net server and my computer ... but I'm back with a vengance.

Picture this: kid buys an '81 Scirocco about 3 years ago. Kid drives it
until the timing belt snaps on the original 1.7 engine. Kid parks car in the
garage, with aspirations of rebuilding the engine. Car sits for a year and a
half. Kid's mother gets pissed off and makes him sell it. Yours truly
scoops up this car for $100 Canadian (that's about 50 pounds for you Brits,
or $70 for the 'mericans). Not a bad deal, eh?

Actually, I lied. The kid drove the car after the belt broke. It didn't
destroy the engine completely, though the compression in cylinder #3 is down.
I'm betting its either a damaged valve or piston. Regardless, I have
several spare German 1.7 engines I can throw in, so its not a big deal either
way. The tranny is the optional 5-speed. It needs the usual ... CVs,
shocks, brakes, and lots of interior detailing (again, it's all there - just
worn around the edges), and there's two sacreligious holes in the rear deck
where 6x9 peakers were mounted. Wheels are the stock 13" alloys; scuffed
somewhat, but nothing that an evening with fine emery paper and patience
can't fix. And the body has a very small amount of surface rust. No
accidents.

All in all, the car needs a lot of work, but how can you go wrong for $100?
Heck, it even has the original owner's manual, still in the glove box. ;-)

So, the stables here at my farm have grown. My '86 is progressing nicely; I
added a set of 14" 'Orlando' VW rims with brand spanking new Good Year NCT/2
195/60 R14 tires. Of course, I'm running the Conti SuperContact snow's now,
as it's the dead of winter here in the cold north. And, I dumped the
original plastic shift knob in favour of a leather Momo knob. Life will
never be the same.

Cheers,
-- Mike
