Re: mechanics

I do almost everything myself too. Only as a last resort do I take it in. If
I have to, I try to just take the part that needs attention, not the whole
car. I don't have all the fancy tools, but you don't need too either. You
can rent a cherry picker or a big torque wrench. I've replaced my engine and
tranny. Removed and installed several exhaust systems. Brakes, springs,
struts, fuel pumps, NOS system,... Right now I'm replacing my 4 speed with a
rebuilt 5 speed(FN) equipped with a Quaife. I'll replace my SS brake lines
with some new ones and replace an outer CV boot while I'm at it too. And most
of my tools fit into a portable tool box. So I really don't have that many
tools.
I've had a time when I picked up a car from a shop and I open the hood and
there was a part sitting on top of a box in the engine compartment. I would
have lost it had I driven off. On the other hand I've been to shops that were
very conscientious and very good about the work they did. I just can't bear
the thought of handing them $70/hr. when I can't have any fun and not get
greasy I guess.
