Disconnected the ball joints?  I didn't know they disconnected.  What car
do you have?  My MKII (unless I'm thinking of different car I've owned)
does not have readily-removable ball joints.  They have to be drilled out.
Are you sure the trannies are identical in length?  If not, there's your
problem.  Also, (I can't imagine this being the problem, though) but are
you sure both cv's are seated well at the wheels and the tranny?
