a somewhat productive Saturday

Hey, guys, I new I'd be sitting at home bored if I didn't find some
automotive trouble to get into. I have '86 8v, and here's what I did:

VALVE COVER & TIMING CHAIN COVER:
I went to the 'yard and picked up a timing chain cover and valve cover.
The timing chain cover cleaned up really nice. The valve cover doesn't
look too bad, but I still can't tell if it's supposed to have any black on
the outside or not. Probably not. Probably just baked on oil. I wanna
"dress up" the motor a bit. What do y'all think I should do as far as
painting these two pieces? The timing chain cover might look best if I
leave it black. Opinions? As far as the valve cover goes, I what thinking
about something pretty high gloss. What color? Car is Marian Red.

ODOMETER!:
I started taking apart a dead instrument cluster on Wednesday. I finally
remembered to bring my drill back home from work yesterday, and I got to
drilling on it. The odo fix from Jan's VW page was right in the case of
this toasted cluster. (I hope the one in the car currently has the same
problem.) That little metal gear at the end of the shaft (opposite the red
gear) was freely spinning. A little burring, and it purrs like a kitten.
(I think it purrs. I'm not sure cuz I had the drill up to 3 or 4k rpms!) :)

LEAKY A/C EVAPORATOR?:
I was the one who had the problem with water on the floor boards. It
appears to be coming from the black box that sits on the hump between the
driver side and the passenger side of the car. Y'all told me there's a
drain that routes the water outside the car and that it's probably plugged.
Sounds reasonable, but I crawled under the car and couldn't find it.
Where is it in relation to the cat, and what does it look like?

HORN:
Sporatically and ever since I've had the car, the horn has had a mind of
its own. Sometimes when I first start the car, the horn just starts
honking by itself. Christine? Nope. Relay, I think. I replace the one
that had a big ol' 53 on it. Hope that's it.

Now I just need to find some good Martian Red sheet metal.... Anybody got
any ideas? Oh, someone posted saying they were looking for that "plug"
that goes into the hole below the dash and left of the steering wheel. I
have one. Still need it? What I need are one or two of those rubber
things that connect the hatch/deck lid to the "trap door." I also need one
or two of the clips that the trap door hinges into. Anyone got some extras
of these parts?

Well, that's it for this post. Please feel free to make all the comments
you like. I value y'all's (yes, that's a word here in Texas) opinions, and
I want to hear what you have to say. Thanks.
