I don't know if your headliner is the same as mine (in the UK) but
here's how I fitted the 'BeeSting' antenna (Thats what we call Golf 16
Valve roof antennas) to my 87 Scirocco.

First remove the rubber surround from the tailgate, then carefully peel
back the lining from around the top and sides of the opening. The lining
is glued on and may be brittle so be carefull, also gently warming the
lining can make it easier. Once you have peeled it back put your hand up
between the lining and the roof, attached to the lining there are thick
steel wires, these are clipped onto the roof. Just hold the wire and
gently push forward until they are off the 5 clips. (By the way they can
be hard to get back on, but it is possible)

Once unclipped you should be able to pull the lining down about 4
inches, there is a sound proofing layer next, this is glued to to roof,
just pull this off. Now you should have access to the back 12 inches of
the roof. Now you can drill down from the top of you car to make the
hole for you antenna.

To refit I found it was best to use a latex based glue, in the UK the
common brand is 'COPYDEX' but I'm sure you guys have a similar product.

To see my beloved Scirocco, check out my web page on

You can just make out the Bee Sting on the back in the second picture.
