Re: Steering rack replacement

Arthur, I have both replaced my manual steering rack when it died &
converted my MK1 to Power steering later on.

Some tips.........

You must use the universal shaft from the non power unit.

You also must attach the u-shaft to the steering column before
attaching it to the rack, also be sure to leave the rack unattached
to the car to give you room to put it up into the u-shaft.

The mounting bushings are different

The boot for the u-shafts are different if you can get the non power
one.

Support the motor as removing the rear trans mount & bracket is a
must.

Get the shifter bracket that is on the rack (the non power one has
lees of a curve where it meets the rack)

Tie rods are different (except the outer ends)

To remove the pump ( I'll assume your car has air with the round
compressor) remove the brackets that surround the pump & that go
underneath the pulley's. Say bye-bye to the p/s belt, the outer
crank pulley, & the outer water pump pulley. Retain the rest of
your belts as they are. The hoses & container should be pretty
straight forward.

You will have to readjust your shifter when your through, I would
read the bentley & be patient. ( it can be a pain sometimes ;-) )
