That s the best way to get one! Use your 1.8L head and you've got a great
combination. 
Look for the obvious things like piston damage. Check the cylinders for
scratches. Make sure the crank rotates easily. (Well, within reason) And
that it doesn't hang up, like at the top or bottom of the stroke.

Factory swirl marks on what? Im assuming the cylinders. How many miles
are on it?
