It's easy to start a VW without the key - once you separate the switch
from the key housing. I ran one of my old sciroccos this way while I was
trying to diagnose an ignition problem . . .  many other makes of cars
are easy to start too.

some sort of cut off switch is highly reccomended . .

I don't know exactly but there was a bent up jumbo paper clip along with 
the remains of my lower steering column housing on the passenger side. 
The Ignition plug was yanked out for easy access. Maybe he used something

else which he took, I'll never know. I'm putting a few cutoffs in myself,

though.
