Motronic years?

Hey Guys and Gals:

When did VW go to the Motronic injection system? My friend bought an '84
BMW 528e and it has the Motronic system. I found it strange as I thought VW
didn't go to this system until '89-90, yet BMW had it already in '84. What
do we get the left over stuff from the other German manufacturers? Hmm.
