Right Chris. Now with the help of my VWWCP handbook, i'll try and explain the
different air sensor housings.

Pre-85 came with the smaller 60mm plate in the air flow sensor housings. (The
housings were also 60mm, to match the plate see. So its not just a matter of
swapping the plates. I know somebody was thinking about doing it!)

Ok, now, there there were 2 models which had the 80mm plate. one plate was
thick (6.35mm) rimmed around where the boot goes on it that connects to the
throttle body. This unit made less HP than the thin (3.2mm) rimmed unit.
The thick plate unit flows more fuel, making it a bettr choice for a turbo or
supercharger application.

Now, the stock unit is good for 170HP, normally aspitated. (Calloway
Turbosystems felt it was good to 130hp in a turbo application, to be safe.)
Id say that a pretty well built unit to allow that much modifications to a m
otor and not have to change the fuel system! Pretty impressive if you ask
me...
HTH!
