>On my '87 16v the light on the water temp gauge blinks for about 5 seconds
when I first start the car (I assume this is normal) BUT sometimes it keeps
on flashing. I can stop it if I turn the car off and re-start the car. I
have checked the water level and it is fine. What could cause this.
BTW I am new to the Watercoold VW world, My past experience with cars have
mostly been Mazda rotary engines.

The LED will blink when the sensor tells the guage the engine is
overheating. Could be a bad/intermittent
temp sender or bad contacts.
A while back, I had this problem and the fan did not come on.
Cleanning the sending unit contacts at the top of the coolent expansion
tank fixed it.
The tank is on the drivers side, near the strut tower. It's got
a two wire plug, and it just pulls off.
It could be an air pocket in the head. loosen upper hose,
let vent, drive, repeat. get really pissed then it goes away.

The sender could be bad too
