Ok,

	I did the same procedure on my 85 8v Golf, and added the cranking of
the engine a few times afterwards.  This seemed to work better than
before.  I must admit that I'd prefer draining the fuel system, as the
fumes and the mess make it more unpleasant that it should be.  Anyway,
my new(old for someone else) fuel pump has been installed and I'll give
it a test drive later this week.
