your mechanic is probably going on dealership prices on parts, I'll 
bet you can save 200-400$ off that by shopping around for the
parts you need. Try Ron's parts for the cv joints, or local Bap Geon
also has them, maybe you can pick up the control arms and tie rods 
out of a junkyard and I don't think those go bad unless your in a 
wreck or something. You can remove and ajust and install your 
alternator yourself, it's frigging easy! those hoses your're 
missing..weird I can't see how a car could run w/o any of the hoses!
But they are also easy to replace if you have the time and patience.
You can also get a new muffler, or again one REAL cheap out of a 
junkyard and take it to Midas and have them weld it up for $10.
timing belt is a must, you'll have to replace that every 60k no 
matter what. Listing everything you said, I can see it costing more 
than $800 at the MOST. then you'l lhave a very solid car (I hope)
