Voltage-bzzzzzzz.

I've got a somewhat silly question, but I _cannot_ find the info anywhere.
Please direct me.

I have a voltage meter in my '84 and I want to know just exactly WHAT
voltage it is measuring? I imagine the voltage of the alternator, correct?


This possibly ties in w/ a problem that's developed recently. When I got
the car, a month ago, the voltage was always between 10-12 (the red/green
striped region). Suddenly one day it pops up to just a hair over 12, which
makes me glad cause we're in the green.

However, at the same time it is suddenly becoming harder to start my car.
I can crank it for about 3 seconds and it will start, or I have to apply
some gas to get it going.

The car idles just fine, I've checked the belts, and though a little
cracked, they are not loose nor to they squeal.

Does anyone have any suggestions on either of these topics, or validation
that I think they may be connected?
