Don't know about the AC and other probs, but the times(yes more than one) I've
run across the lights only working when I played with the dimmer knob, it
always turned out to be the dimmer itself. On all Scirocco IIs, you just
have to replace the light switch/dimmer module. I've gotten them for around
$10-15 I think. But you'll pay more through a dealer. Its not too hard to
replace. I don't know if its covered in the Bentley. Basically, there are
two metal clips that hold it in, one on either side of the switch. You just
have to reach up into the dashboard, and depress the clips, and push out.
Email me if you have any Qs about it. I am pretty confident that if the
lights work only when you're tweaking the dimmer, its because the
rheostat(variable resistor) in the dimmer is screwed, on mine the wiper arm
was getting fried.

Make sure this is your only problem. If you blow another, I would imagine
you've got a short somewhere in the dash light circuit. Let me know if this is
the case, I've had to trouble shoot it before and it royally sucks. If someone
else has touched your dash wiring, go over it with a fine tooth comb. A hacked
radio install was the source of my problem.
