There are many different formulas (alloys) for stainless, and they all have
different properties. Some stay nice and shiny but do not respund well
to bending (they crack more easily), some do not stay as shiny but they
bend very nicely. Therefore, in a stainless exhaust system you will find
several different alloys of stainless used depending on the specific
application (muffler vs. pipes, etc). The alloy used in the pipes will often
get a brownish/orange patina with time but should never actually *rust*.
Perhaps this discoloration is what someone interpreted as rust?
