You said it yourself - you get what you pay for. A $250 job is basically
going to be some bond-o slapped onto a lightly sanded surface, with a single
thick coat of primer to hide the multitude of sins and a quick once-over with
the paint gun. Not befitting for a Scirocco. =)

My sunroof does the same thing. It's not that bad to adjust; just spend some
time with the service manual - it'll exaplin what needs to be done. Most
bodyshops expect to do small repair work; if the car was perfect, you
wouldn't need to repaint it! I'm having my car done in about two weeks, and
it's going to set me back about $900 Canadian. That will buy me a complete
sandblast in the lower half of the car, repair of minor dents and dings here
and there, straighten out the bodywork under the door handle (where someone
tried to get in with a big screwdriver), weld in a few small sections of
metal where the original bodywork is just too thin from rust, two fine coats
of primer, and a few coats of ??? paint (the same as used in high-end cars
like Mercedes and such, can't remember the exact name of it now). Definitely
good enough for a wax and polish on a sunny Sunday afternoon, though it might
not be 100 point concours show perfect.

It depends. If you're going from a relatively neutral colour (silvers,
blacks, and such) to something else, it won't be bad. It all depends on how
fanatical you want to get. You'll have to get the doorsills repainted too,
which usually adds a few hundred dollars onto the bill. My bodyman quoted me
$250 more if I wanted to change colours.
