bypassing the idiotic cooling fan switch or thermal switch- whatever you
wanna call it. The water temp guage never goes up more than half way up
unless I'm hauling ass on the 'bahn' on a hot day. Today I drove to
Frankfurt at a steady 180kph(114mph)and the guage barely went past the half
way point then dropped a little below the halfway and stayed there. And
surprisingly it still warms up quick in the morning and it was kinda cold
today, too. But I guess what I want an opinion on is if this is a good idea
or not. So far nothing bad has come of it. It seems the 1.8 runs so hot
with that cooling fan switch. Anyone agree? The Scirocco I had in the
states ran real hot!

Um...... I dunno, depends on the car and the comdition of the cooling
system. I just drove from San Diego to Las Vegas and back a little while ago
and was running around 115 for most the trip and my water temp was never
over 180! I find that high speeds keeps my car cool. On one of my stops on
the way there, I discovered my water temp jumped to 210 deg and soon learned
while I was filling up with fuel, that the cannon plug to the fan motor had
fallen off! (DOH!) Put it back on and within a few minutes, 180 again. It
hardly goes up any higher than 180 no matter if im in the desert or cruising
the beach here at home, homie! (heh-heh) I think it all depends with the
condition of the cooling system. (I know I already said that but it sounds
so.... noble or something!! )
FYI* I too have the 1.8L in my 82'
