I had the same kinda problem on my '82 rabbit.  Does your car seem to catch for
a sec after you turn it awhile?  Thats what mine did and it was the fuel pump.
A good idea is to get the problem to occur, pull out you fuel pump fuse, try to
start the car.  If you get the same reaction you have at least almost certainly
narrowed it down to fuel.  I'm not sure what went wrong on the pump, somebody
told me they get a pinhole in the diaphram inside and when it fills up with
gas you go ka-put.  Hope this helps.
