Tank recall (bear with me, an honest question!)

Mine (1987 16V) got replaced on the recall but only after a long session of
me proving that my VIN fell within the right range, the dealer's online
recall notice showed VINs that were a digit short. Then a long wait for
approval from on high, sure, yeah, whatever. And mine had been replaced
before. It leaked, if I recall correctly, right over the axle on the
passenger's side. You could see gas on the axle, and did it stink!
