Testing while fuel system down

If you want to see how the engine will crank once you get the fuel system back together then leave the spark plugs in.
With the fuel pump relay pulled you should be OK without the fuel distributor in place. The fuel delivery line might dribble some though.
As Allyn said this is a good opportunity to test cylinder compression should you have the tester and the desire.

A suggestion for when you get the new fuel distributor. Mark has probably checked all this and it has already been mentioned in some of the posts but no harm in repeating.
First make sure the plunger/pin moves up and down freely in the fuel distributor.
Second make sure the air flow plate has the correct resting height per the Bentley and doesn't rub against the sides of the air flow cone.
Third, before plugging the injectors into the head, but with the rest of the fuel system fully assembled, install your fuel pump relay jumper (or fuel pump relay and cycle the ignition switch) and make sure there is no fuel flow from the injectors. (Same test you did before to find the injectors were spraying).
Last you probably will need to purge any air from the system. You can probably do this just by cranking, but while you've got the setup (fuel pump running, injectors pointed into some container) you might want to pull the air flow plate up for a couple seconds until only fuel comes out of the injectors.
