At that time I had just bought a new 1973 Mazda RX-3 (Sunrise Red -
gas sucking, poor handling, and tire smoking little monster). I would
already have been disappointed to hear VW was discontinuing the
Karmann Ghia, which I had wanted since buying a new 71 super beetle
while stationed in Germany.  I waited another 22 months, dumped the
Mazda and bought VWs replacement for the Ghia.  And there it all
started.
