MkI coolant temp guage with 2 prong ABA sensor



The temp sensor are just variable resistors. So, there is no reason the ABA sensor won't work with your existing gauge.
The issue here is probably that sensors just have different resistance curves.
On Kirsten's 1.8T swap we simply added resistance in series with the sensor until the gauge read in the middle of the range when the engine was at normal operating temp.
