smoking alternator ground

I thought that the car is ready to be driven. I went to start it today 
after it sitting for a while and the ground wire from the alternator to 
the neg battery post started smoking. Ideas? The wire looks like a PO 
jury rig as it is routed in front of the radiator and around to the 
battery cable.

Also, I seem to have a leak at the rear hatch... I'll check the archives 
for that one since I know it has been brought up before.
