Welding, How did people learn?

I learned while working maintenance at a lumber mill and I could weld
ok. I later took an adult ed class at my local high school(about $45 and
$20 for materials) and I learned how I should have learned the first time
around. I would look for a class with more hands on than class room. I
went for 3 hours a night, one night a week for eight weeks and learned
oxy/accet, MIG, TIG, Plasma cutting and some other little fun things like
making faux wrought iron type fence/rail things and bending with sand.
