02j transmission in A1

I finally got my hands on an 02A case and much to my surprise, despite all the misinformation on Vortex, the cases are dimensionally the same.
The 3 holes on the upper driver's side of the differential that are frequently used are the same.
The case bolt holes at the lower rear of the differential, also frequently used, are the same.
The two lugs at the top left of the trans case are in the same location although they are tapped on the 02J and through holes on the 02A.
The 02A does not have the dog bone mounting holes on the bottom of the bellhousing, so my 02J brackets need to be modified to work on an 02A, but to my knowledge nobody else uses those holes so the brackets should be interchangeable there.
The last difference that I can think of is the reverse light switch sticks out the front of the shift assembly but to the left so it can interfere with the tranny end bracket depending on design. This is something for you to check with your 02A brackets. IIRC, AND I COULD BE WRONG HERE, you can install the 02A shift assembly into the 02J to get around this clearance problem.
I have to laugh when I see the pictures of the 02A rear bracket that won't fit onto an 02J on Vortex. The simple fact is it won't fit on an 02A either!! The two cases are identical in this area!

Flanges: the 02J comes with either 100mm or 108mm flanges depending on use and code. They are interchangeable and there is only a single bolt in the center to remove them so easily done.

Clutch: One of the European models used a cable clutch and the parts can be had although I don't know where to get them. I think it was the Eurovan, so maybe a quick look at ETKA 7?

Shifter: The cable shifter isn't that difficult to install although you do have to cut a big hole in your center tunnel. OTOH, I've seen one instance where somebody built a linkage setup to make with the stock 02J shifter mechanism so it can be done. Probably more work than installing the cable shift box.

PS, I now make brackets for both the 02J and 02A trannies to install in the A1 chassis should anybody be interested.
