Was: Early/ late brake MC, Now: I hate Dealers

Thanks Gordy and Sean,
Reason I asked about the brake MC; I recently bought a 1981 Mk1 online.
Before buying, I arranged to have the car evaluated by a local (to the
seller) VW dealership at my expense, wanting to get a good idea of condition
before I plunked down my money.
The Seller claimed to have upgraded the brakes along with the 16v swap.
I can see the 16v in the car's engine bay in pictures but asked the
dealership specifically to check the brake system. An "upgrade" from stock
'81 to "parts from an '87" is going to involve rears (discs replacing
drums), fronts (still discs, but larger diameter), larger bore MC, and
appropriate proportioning valve. Or at least some of these. Not necessarily
distrusting the Seller, but I thought it would be a good credibility check
as well as tell me how completely (competantly) the brake upgrade had been
done. Same guy did the engine swap...
So I had asked the dealer to check any of these items that could be done
"easily", meaning without disassembly, or massive shop hours...
The report I got from the dealer stated "could not tell on brakes...".
That's all they said on that topic.
OK... front's would be a different diameter than stock, visible/
accessible from inboard. Use a ruler.
Rear's are either drum or disc. Visibly different, wouldn't you think?
[the car has 14" snowflakes mounted, so you can see the disc or drum from
outboard, right?]
I don't know yet how to check type on the prop. valve, but soon will
figure that out.
And now I find that the brake MC bore size is visible, let's see, CAST
ON THE BLOODY PART!!!

I ended up buying the car, looks reasonable for the price, and I'm not
expecting it to be "perfect", I know there will be issues to sort out.
But I am pissed off having paid for an evaluation, received very little
useful information, none at all on points that I specifically asked to have
checked and they could easily have done.
I think I'm going to make time to drop by that dealership and... have a
little talk with the manager.
Thanks again guys for your help.

Karl
