Timing help

Lexan,

Assume everybody who previously touched the car a possessed psychotic.

Pull out the bently bible.
If you dont have one.
I am assuming an 8v.
get a 19mm and line up the crankshaft to TDC. thats the DOT not the hack on
the flywheel.

Now there are 3 other points that should line up.
the dot on the inside of the cam gear (IIRC) should line up with the top of
the head NOT the valvecover.
next there is a V shaped divet on the crank Vbelt pully that lines up with a
dot or line on the intermediate shaft.

This is the mechanical timing.
ie. the Valves should be closed for clyn #1.
the piston should be at the top of the stroke

next check the ignition order. 1-3-4-2 -- DOUBLE CHECK That I always screw
it up.. Too many motors in brain.

pop the distributor cap. and check if the rotor is pointed at the right one.

and then make sure the wires are on in the correct rotation.

Next hook up a timing light and crank it. do you get good steady flashing.
if not you issues.

BTW if you dont have a bentley. hop on parts4vws.com and order it. you need
it.
then watch ebay for "how to keep your vw rabbit/scirocco alive"

Hows that :-)
bigmac.
