Paging Ben Harder/ Road racing a car that doesn't fit in a "good" class

koabi,

I do indeed have a 1.8t mk1 that I road race and occasionally autocross... there is a very big
difference between the two types of racing and how class rules apply...

To be honest, when I built my car I had one plan in mind... to build my mk1 the way I wanted to
build it! I had a limited budget at the time and wanted to make my mk1 handle the best it could
and go as fast as I could afford. ;) (Speed = $$ right?)

The past few years I have really had a lot of fun racing with the PCA (Porsche Club of America) at
open track events... if you've never been to one I highly recommend it. Any car can enter to run
these events... there are no car classes, just divisions for driver skill and lap times. Everyone
starts out in the novice class, regardless if you have a GT3 or a stock Scirocco. But after you
start attending more and more of these track events, and prove out your driving ability to the
instructors... they start to notice if you need to move up to the next class or not. I have been
racing for about three years now and have moved all the way up so that I am now racing with the
top guys... I'll admit that I wouldn't be there without a fast little car, but it is soooo fun to
be racing with guys with 911's and being about to keep up with them around the track. To me, it
doesn't get much better. :)

To better answer your question, I would say to get some more advice from Neal Tovsen on the
list... he autocrosses a mk1 scirocco with a g60 conversion. Neal races very competitively in the
Street Mod class with the SCCA... that is the same class that my mk1 would be in as well...for
autocross that is. Looking at Neal, there is no doubt that you can be very competitive with a
modded scirocco, but you really do need to read the rules and plan out what you want to build. As
for road racing a modified Scirocco... I'm sure that there is a class you could fit into, but I
would research it if you want to compete. If you want to essentially "play" and just go out there
to have fun like I do, then build whatever your imagination (and wallet) will allow! ;)

Ben
