rough starts

To anyone the can lend an idea:
i have an 86 8v with cruise, a/c, power steering, sunroof, your
'wolfsburg' edition. last summer i converted it to a 90 2.0L 16v from a
passat. the motor was beefed up internally with an aftermarket exhaust cam
and a factory exhaust cam in place of the intake cam, it's lumpy(and almost
sounds like a V8). i changed the brakes, rear beam, took out the a\c, power
steering rack to manual, cruise isn't hooked up. i used the engine harness
from an 87 16v. also i used the fuel injection components and the ignition
components from the 87 16v. (cis to cis-e) . 8v to a 16v complete
conversion. my problem is that when i go to start it from it sitting over
night, it takes forever and most of the time it won't start unless i fiddle
with the key while trying to crank it, i.e. after letting it crank a few
cycles, i'll let the key go and turn it back to start. the motor will sound
like compression is released then it'll start. when it's warm it'll will
take a few cycles and mostly start right up, sometimes i'll let go of the
key after a few cycles and it'll start. i've tried changing th cold start
valve, i think there's something else....i now have gas coming out of the
fuel pressure regulator ( the part that is right above the pump on top of
the gas tank lip...?!?!) I think it's something simple in the way it's all
hooked up, or maybe some of the donor parts are no good? someone pleas give
me an idea...
what is the stock fuel pressure for the 90 2.0l 16v? 87 cis-e fuel
pressure?

thank you scirocco list for you help.....
