Strut bearing replacement

Andy,
If you remove the ball joint and disconnect the tie rod, you can pull
the strut and hub as a unit, you won't need to realign your car. I did
it when I installed my lowering springs on my 16v, it's not difficult
and saves time and money in the end.

I dropped it down and it didn't want to go down far enough to let me tip it out from the fenderwell. I think it was either the tierod end or the balljoint that limited the travel. It looks like I'll need to put an allen wrench in the shaft of the strut and use either a offset box wrench or a socket that I can turn w/ a wrench to undo the top nut. Should I be able to pull this off without unbolting the strut from the knuckle?

At least that's how they were assembled on my MK1. The struts on my A2's have all had the bearings just slide out of the top, not even threaded.
