Scirocco-l Digest, Vol 21, Issue 22

Don's right about starting with the basics: the engine has to have compression, fuel and spark, and it has to turn over fast enough on the starter. It sounds like cranking is not the problem, so I would rule out battery, starter, and grounds. I did not hear what year we are talking about here, but was assuming we were talking about a CIS car. If so, the second and third lines of his description of the symptoms would point me to the fuel system.

Hot restart problems (for CIS) are often caused by a pressure bleed-down problem due to faulty check valves at the pump, fuel distributor, or warm-up regulator (depending on year). If it starts easier cold if the key is cycled to on for a few seconds once or twice before going to crank, the fuel pump relay may not be activating in the crank mode due to a faulty ignition switch.

Having someone else stick their head under the back of the car where the fuel pump is will tell you if it is humming during cranking (remember to leave it in neutral with the brake on). Depending on year, the fuel pump relay won't engage if the ignition is not getting a primary signal during cranking, so I would also check to see if there is a spark when cranking (which you'd want to do anyway).

Check simple things first.
Battery not holding enough charge ( Ihad this problem on my old 8v)
Starter drawing too much current (Bad Starter)
Bad Grounds.
Timing
Distributor
Spark from distributor.
