Yep, being a VW guy from way back, the GM engine is a little embarrasing, but it's the lightest, cheapest, most reliable way to get 120 hp in an airplane! The Corvair fanatics and the VW fanatics are only a couple of genes apart. Does it help that it has 94mm VW pistons and cylinders? That's how you hotrod a Corvair. Kind of ironic, since the ultimate upsizing for an aircooled VW in the 70's used to be a Corvair engine! It's just a big overgrown VW, but even easier to work on, with hydraulic lifters and easy access to the crank and rods from a cover on top. See http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/trial_assy.html and http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/ for details on the "Big Boy" conversion and the engine in general. Don't think I haven't considered all of the VW aircooled engines, and a few of the watercooled!

Thanks for all the replies. I'll see y'all in June. I checked out the Scirocco.org members page, and I think I'll be the oldest guy on the place, but I'll probably be having the most fun...
