Have you done a leakdown test?
It can provide a lot more information than a compression test. Specifically you can determine if you have leakage past the valves or past the piston. Good indicator if the valves are not sealing or if the rings are not seated.
I'm also curious what cam you're running?  IIRC the Euro GTI used the "G" grind cam.

As far as break-in, I'm going to try the run it hard and fast approach with my engine. Did the easy 1000 mile break-in routine with my nephew's engine and it appears his rings did not seat. Course his block was honed with an 800 grit stone on the recommendation of the piston supplier, which in retrospect is probably much too fine to actually wear the rings into the cylinder.
Need to rering it this summer so it can live up to it's power potential.
