MkI fuel accumulator question

Are you sure *all* injected VW's have an accumulator?

Sometime last year, I removed mine on the advice of Abe Potter, who not only happens to be a long-time autocrosser of a Digifant-1 converted Scirocco (which is now owned by Kevin Wenzel, who drove it to win the 2005 FSP National Championship), but also a long-time VW certified tech and former VWoA employee. I also run Digi-1 myself. In my case, I only removed it because I wanted to mount the fuel filter in that location since there isn't a good place for it on the passenger side of the engine bay.

My understanding is that the accumulator was only for CIS cars, and was necessary to keep the pulse of the pump from disturbing the spray pattern of the "always-on" injectors. EFI injectors obviously aren't subject to this issue. Further, I was assured most whole-heartedly that the accumulator has nothing whatsoever to do with prevention of fuel starvation...it operates more like an electrical capacitor than an "Accusump for fuel."

Take that info for what it is worth...but I have had zero issues. In fact, if anyone needs an accumulator for their CIS car, I still have mine in fantastic shape that I just re-discovered in my parts pile last weekend. It is the kind *without* the hose on the opposite side of the can from the fuel fittings...

I typically won't remove or bypass it unless I am provoked (fuel pump line
starts leaking, accumulator rusts so badly it falls off of car, etc).
:)
Actually, for Cincy 2k+2 I showed up without the accumulator - and since the
reservoir had just cracked, I had it bypassed as well! Actually, that was the
year Ron took me to the autox, and I remember being paranoid about not having a
full enough tank to avoid fuel cut in the final right-hand sweeper at the end of
the course. Turns out 1/4 tank was enough to handle it, though I believe I was
subliminally holding back a bit on that turn.
