Exactly.  Especially since it is often easier to get an insurance
company other than your own to write you a check for the damage rather
than pay a shop directly.  That is, you get a quote from a shop,
demand that amount, and have the insurance company write the check to
you.  (Doesn't work with your own insurance company though) You take
the money, fix it yourself, and usually come out a few bucks ahead for
the headache.  My sister's car was hit when parked a few weeks ago.
She's got quotes from shops and we'll likely use one of them for
paint, but we're asking for the money directly so I can try to fix up
what I can first, like finding a replacement tail light and such.

(97 Passat passenger side light, that is ;)  Anyone got one kicking
around?  Or pass. side mirror in silver?)
