my mk1 won't start

Thanks for the help so far. I hope you'll bear with me as I'm not very good
at all this car stuff. I went out and tried that car again, it started fine.
I shut it off and tried it a second time, no dice, same symptoms as before.
Then I used a length of wire to jump the spade connector on the solenoid to
the pos battery terminal, it started. So that rules out the solenoid right?
Since both the ignition switch and fuse box are around 6 months old (another
non start issue that turned out to be a corroded fuse box), that makes the
most likely candidate the wiring right? So where do these wires from the
solenoid go? do they go directly to the ignition switch? Fuse box? Somewhere
else? I have the wiring diagrams in the Bentley, but I can't make heads or
tails of those things.
