Causes for lowered gas preformance?

The platinum's, in my experience, don't seem to work so well in the 8V's. They seem to miss easily at idle. So, Bosch copper, or NGK as Brian points out, are both a better solution as far as I'm concerned.

As far as the gas mileage, check your vacuum lines. You should have a vacuum line from the back of the throttle body to the advance canister on the distributor. At idle, with the throttle plate fully closed, you should feel no vacuum a the distributor end. You should however feel vacuum at the distributor end if you open the throttle primary plate so the engine's running at 2000 RPM or so.

If you have a timing light, with the vacuum advance disconnected, as you rev the engine you should see the timing advance. With the vacuum connected you should see 10-15? degrees additional advance.

If your mechanical advance isn't working correctly (you don't see any advance with increasing RPM with vacuum disconnected) you will feel a distinct lack of pep. If your mechanical advance is working correctly, but vacuum advance isn't, then the engine will have the same WOT performance, but mileage will really suffer under part throttle conditions and to some extent the engine will feel less responsive.
