A former Qantas baggage handler at Sydney Airport charged with a
*terrorist offence* has been granted bail *even though police allege
that he helped another suspected terrorist, Saleh Jamal, to jump bail
and flee to Lebanon.

The decision yesterday to free Bilal Khazal, 34, who last night was
still trying to meet the *$10,000 bail*, angered the Federal Government,
which immediately began planning laws for a presumption against bail in
terrorism cases.

Sydney's Central Local Court was told for the first time yesterday of
the connection between *Jamal, accused of links with al-Qaeda*, and
*Khazal, who has been under investigation by ASIO for the past 10 years.*

Federal police alleged that Khazal gave Jamal money in March to enable
him to flee Australia while on bail for the drive-by shooting at Lakemba
police station in 1998.

The court also heard that *Khazal - convicted in absentia in Beirut for
terrorist offences* - had links to a person suspected of compiling false
passports, and "extensive overseas contacts".

Khazal, who was born in Lebanon, has been *named in a CIA report as
having alleged links to al-Qaeda*. He was not charged over his Jamal
connections but with collecting or making documents likely to facilitate
terrorist acts, *an offence that carries a maximum 15 years' jail*.

Police described documents such as a book written in Arabic which
"espouses extremist militant views of killing persons not of the same
beliefs", including Australians.

DURHAM - A suspected gang member *awaiting trial for murder was arrested
early Saturday for the seventh time* since being charged in 2004 with
killing a Durham man.

Roy Oswald Bodden, 21, was being held at the Durham County jail Saturday
in lieu of *$10,000 bail* on charges he was *carrying 23 small baggies
of marijuana* during an early-morning search, according to arrest warrants.

Since being charged with murder in the February 2004 killing of Nathan
L. Alston, 24, at a public housing complex at 2507 S. Roxboro St.,
Bodden has been accused of *driving with a revoked license, carrying a
gun . . *

In April 2005, Bodden also was *arrested in connection with an armed
robbery in which the victim was shot*, according to police and court
