Emissions failure

As Cathy mentioned, do you have some hardcopy showing the results? The
mix is very important and can be too lean or rich. Different emissions
are produced at different mixes.
My 16V failed last fall, it was just over the limit on the NOx. Since I
had only one free retest and did not want to keep going back to the test
center I decided to bring the car to the local VW guru. He tested the
emissions before and after the cat and confirmed that the cat was not
working. He tweaked it as best as he could and had one final
suggestion; Change the oil. His theory is that the crankcase breathing
is part of the intake/combustion systems on the 16V and if the oil is
full of old combustion byproducts, it will be picked up by the testing.
Just one mechanics opinion. I passed BTW, the limit was 1944 ppm and I
was putting out 1933 ppm.
This may have no bearing on the issue with your car, just a general
suggestion.

What were the readings? Too rich or too lean will cause a failed test.
Any
idea if CO/HC/ or NOX were too high? A cat will clean up things, but it
can
only do so much if it's way off.

Here they won't even run them if there's a bad leak.
Cathy
