my version of the idle problem

One guess is that it's the control pressure regulator is closing too soon or
there may be a restriction in it that makes it look like it's closing too
soon. Try unplugging the electrical connector to the CPR the next time you
start the cold engine and see it the symptoms are the same.
Second guess is that the auxilliary air valve (does a 16V have this?) is
stuck closed or not fully open, when cold. Check it out.
Good Luck.

Subject: my version of the idle problem

my 16v has some of the (i guess famous) scirocco idle problem(s)

starts fine, then runs for a few minutes very well

as the engine starts to warm up, but isn't at normal temp yet, it
begins to stumble pretty badly - have to dance on the gas to keep it
up, and it's no use driving anywhere in gear during this phase.

as soon as the car is warm (temp gauge near the middle), the idle
smoothes right out again.

any ideas on what causes this behavior?
