NOW: STATE RENEWAL FEES WAS: relocation woes

No scirocco here (right now) but just moved from Colorado to New Hampshire.

Cost around $300 to register my 93 subaru impreza in CO, renew yearly $20-30, mandatory insurance but no inspection or emissions. you do need an e-test on the front range sprawling megalopolis.
Moved to NH and registered the Subaru AND a '99 Ranger for about $275, rigorous inspection and E-test for $50, insurance is not mandatory and neither is wearing a seatbelt. Not sure about renewal cost.
From the DMV: "Antique motor vehicle or motorcycle'' shall mean any motor vehicle over 25 years old which is maintained for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades and other functions of public interest.
No income or sales tax and my grocery bill has been cut by a third. Beer can be bought at any gas or convenience store and on Sundays too!!

In South Carolina it is pretty cheap to own these cars. Annual renewal for
the tags is $12 paid biannually (every two years for the impaired) and taxes
are collected annually. My taxes for each of the three last year was under
$13 each. No inspections or tests.

I was wondering how widely driving/registration laws/fees varied from state
to state. I know California is probably strictest for emissions, but I'd be
curious what the annual renewal process costs in time and money in various
states. And at what point your car becomes historic. Here it's 30 years old
for a reduced (historic) license fee, 20yrs for no emissons, unless it's
newer than 87, in which case it has to test every two years forever. $74 for
plates + 37.50 for the ETest. How does that stack up? Just curious, we can
split it off into a different threads if you want.
