Here is the brief quote from "Volkswagen Sport Tuning:
for Street and Competition" (Per Schroeder; Bentley
Publishers):  

"The downside of the automatic (clutch cable) is that
it can fail, causing abnormal wear on your clutch..."

Sounds to me like an improper installation; hence, it
is incorrect and acts as 'failed'.  Suggest he r/r
with a manual and see if that does the trick.  That
should at least isolate.

FWIW, I fail to see why not a manual.  I adjust it
just a few times during the life of the cable.  I
think the problems with self-adjusters can make them overrated.
