1.8t... anyone try to fit a 16v head?

Thanks... trying to figure the potential costs. Up to $700 for valves,
if all bent; assume pistons are fine. Gaskets/timing belt/tensioner
etc. another $500. So, $1000 to $1200 to fix it if labor is free. Or,
used head might be cheaper than new valves (plus gaskets/timing belt
stuff)

No.
The exhaust manifold bolt pattern is different (and I suspect the port
spacing is different too since the 16V outer cylinder ports are angled
in somewhat).
The intake manifold bolt pattern is different also and the port sizes
and shapes are quite different.
There are also other subtle differences like the coolant outlet on the
head and the location of various sensors that will complicate things.
And don't forget that the 16V head leans forward on the block while the
20V head does not and that the angle of the manifold flanges on the two
heads are also quite different.
Valves for the 1.8T are not cheap at $22 for the intakes and $52 for the
exhaust (at Techtonics which is hardly the cheapest source out there)
but the cost of doing a conversion can rapidly escalate and make the
cost of valves seem pretty reasonable.
