Any one know anything about A/C?

If R-134a causes corrosion in general, why are you only seeing A4 cars with this? VW has been using 134a since '95 (my Passat, for example), and that's about the only thing on the car that hasn't been fixed. Sounds like a problem with a particular type to me - maybe a corrosion problem, even one that wouldn't have happened with R-12, but doesn't sound like a blanket problem with 134a cars. How's that for a runon sentence!

Isn't there a direct replacement for R-12 out now? I thought I had seen something that you can throw in your R-12 system that is as cheap as R-134? Am I dreaming?

Well, I have to disagree... The two core buyers that come by looking for
compressor cores and I agree, compressors were much more likely to go to
shiesse when R134 was introduced. It is something about when moisture gets
into the mix with R134 and its oil, it becomes corrosive. What's more is
the compressors have to run at MUCH higher head pressures (50% IIRC), and
the condensors and evaporators are not the same. They will each work in
their conterparts systems, but not as well since they were not designed
to...

I can't find the link with a lot of specific evidence that demonstrates
R134s faults, but I did find a few with 'R134' & 'Corrosive' under a search
on Google...

BTW, I should mention that the compressors I mention, nearly all are Sanden.
Also, most of these AC systems have not been touched since new. corrosion...

HOWEVER, I will try to find that link...

David

-----Original Message-----
From: Chuck Blue [mailto:sukchew@cox-internet.com]
Sent: Saturday, June 18, 2005 12:53 PM
To: David Utley; Timbo; Scirocco list
Subject: Re: Any one know anything about A/C?

I can't believe you replaced 250 compressors because the had R134 in the
system. There must have been some other reason.
I am not a AC expert but my experience with daily work on recovery
machines has not borne out your statement.
If the AC system is properly set up and charged R134 will work as good as
R12 with the possible exception of cooling at idle.If your AC is making cold
air it don't matter what is in the system.
my .02 worth.
ole blue

----- Original Message -----
From: "David Utley" <fahrvegnugen@cox.net>
To: "Timbo" <timjmcconnell@gmail.com>; "Scirocco list"
<Scirocco-l@scirocco.org>
Sent: Sunday, June 19, 2005 12:01
