Re: Question for the Boosted guys....

Unless your exhaust manifold has fallen off, you will get some boost. It may
be very little, and will be very late in the rpm range, but you will get
something.

Check the waste gate (as suggested prior) or find the issue with the exahust
man gasket.

Exhaust man gaskets don't usually fail (from my personal experience), unless
there is an issue like exsessive heat.

1st make sure it is the gasket leaking and not a cracked/blown manifold.
That is usually what happens. Is it a cast mani or a tubular welded one?
The casts usually last longer, but many people go with the tube weld for
weight and easier design (for the diy that is), but they are not as durable
I found.

I have had 2 tube manifolds break. They crack first and then if you keep
running then the crack ends up shearing the tube and you basically have a
free flow exaust :) This might cause no boost if the mani is completely
broken on one of the exaust runners.

If the manifold is fine, then check the turbo. If the turbo has been over
heated and the bearings are going, it will eventually sieze. It usually
starts with a spooling problem and a whining noise (but not always noise
depending on your turbo), the extra drag cause by the bad bearings will
cause back pressure. The extra pressure and extream heat usually causes the
gaskets to fail. Eventurally, the turbo will not spin and this will
definitely cause no boost :( If you have to replace your exaust gasket ,
might as well disconnect the turbo and check the cart. to make sure the fins
are spinning freely and/or your don't have shaft play.

The leak is really bad. It is VERY loud. I was getting boost up until
today. I am not hearing any spooling or the waste gate opening. I am new
to the turbo, so not sure what noises I should be hearing. I am not
hearing
any of the ones I was hearing though. I run up to about 6500 rpm and no
extra power.

Thanks,

Dave

If the leak is before the turbo then it's letting out the pressure needed
to
drive the turbo.
I'm suprised you're getting no boost though.
When this happened to my nephew's car the boost was really laggy, but it
would get up to full boost
at higher RPM.
It's either a really big leak or something else is wrong.
Dan
