Subject: HELP!!! Broken down in NC

I JUST was beeeotching about this a day or so ago! Why would it keep
working loose like that? Could it be a bad bearing in the alternator is
causing vibration that is working this loose? I have no idea if there is a
bad bearing or not, just a thought. After Cathy's comment I am not sure I
want to put LOCTITE on this bolt if I can find another one.

Chris,
Sorry to hear of your misfortune! I have had the same problem in a way,
snapping the bolts that hold the top mount. In my case, there were two
reasons. The bearing in the alt. was on the way out, and you could feel it
if you took it off and spun it. The other cause? The motor was well worn.
When I got it, I drove it harder than I think it had been driven in
sometime. The H/G was leaking oil into the cylinders, and that oil had
turned into TONS of carbon. When I drove it, it blew out the carbon, which
when it was released it tried frantically to go out the exhaust valve. This
ate the pistons up horribly on that side, and therefore the whole engine has
a horrific vibration at about 4K, which happens to be cruising on the
highway (GTI tranny)...

Does either of your vibrate a lot, esp. at about 4K?
