electrical gremlins, water leaks (mk 1), seat swaps

My 79 mk 1 has developed a headlight problem. Electrical gremlins are the
only problem I have, the car is mostly rebuilt. I have noticed water under
the driver's side floor mat, and I think it leaks from the windshield down
by the fusebox. Anyone else have this problem? I live in rainy Olympia, WA.
The car is always garaged but it sits outside while I'm at work. The right
front headlight will not come on sometimes. The first time it happened I
replaced the headlight, and the darn thing didn't come on. I had a spare
switch, replaced that, but I'm not sure what made it come back on that time.
The second time, I drove to work and noticed that when I turned the lights
on, the right one came on after the left one. I got in it after work, no
right headlight. Test light said no juice to the headlight. Kicked on the
high beams, get all 4 lights. If you look at the Haynes wiring diagrams, the
fuse is the last thing on the way to the headlight. I twisted the fuse and I
think.that made the headlight come on. The juice for all 4 lights runs
through the blinker switch also, not sure if that is the problem either. I
can't hear any relays click when I turn on the lights, and the manuals I
have don't specify what relays turn on what.

Seats.the car has the original ones, the driver's seat is broken down. I
drive it a lot. I rebuilt an 83 JH code 1.8 last June at 133k. It has 141k
now, 8k in 6 months. I have a sore rear when I get out after a long drive,
but it does have a tight suspension and you feel every bump in the road.
I've looked at aftermarket seats, they seem kinda hard. It's not uncommon
for me to drive 2 tanks of gas on the weekends, we have fun roads here
(Olympic Peninsula). I drool over those black leather seats in the newer
Jettas, anyone know if they fit? I'm not autocrossing so I'm looking for
comfort. Any ideas?
