MK1 with 2.0L cross-flow?

I knew John Ryland, who put a cross flow ABA into his '78 Scirocco back in the late 1990s:

Using an existing upper strut tie bar was out of the question, and IIRC he had to have some metal off the inside of the hood.
He later sold the car.
